Team Concepts’ training presents a multifaceted approach to learning. Individuals absorb and process information in different ways which makes classroom learning great for only a portion of learners. By engaging clients in academic settings, in emotionally engaging seminars, in applied break–outs with their teams, and in experiential activities in which participants begin testing what they’ve just learned, our leadership training lessons are communicated in a way that maximizes the retention and adoption for learners of every style.
Based on the educational philosophies of John Dewey, Jean Piaget, and Kurt Lewin, Kolb and Fry developed the Experiential Learning Model, a process of learning that includes four stages:
- Concrete experience
- Observation and reflection on that experience
- Formation of abstract concepts based upon the reflection
- Testing the new concepts
The ability to take in information, reflect on it and its relation to one’s previous experience, and apply new concepts in the field allows the learner freedom to experiment with immediate feedback. A rhythmic flow from unconscious
behavior to conscious abstraction is necessary for training aimed at application.
Constructivism suggests that when learners are exposed to novel situations that challenge them just at the edge of their ability and are expected to create meaning out of their own experience, they ultimately take responsibility for their understanding and are motivated to integrate new knowledge as competence increases. Any learning in which the participant is ultimately in control – where the teacher is merely a facilitator in the process – leads to more robust and sustainable takeaways. A learning environment in which each participant is taking in information relevant to his or her own experience creates a dynamic interaction between the task, the facilitator, and the other learners that allows the group as a whole to observe each other’s behavior and to dramatically advance their understanding through collaboration.
By combining experiential learning activities with emotionally engaging, inspirational sessions, our training programs not only enhance learning but also motivate behavioral change. Team Concepts’ integrated learning method involves participants’ minds, bodies, and hearts, transforming participants in the direction of their individually designed leadership action plans.
