Second Secret Other Eight Types ASK |
|
The other eight personality types talk about the desire to
be loved, to be valuable, to be oneself, to be competent, to be secure, to be
happy, to protect oneself, to be at peace with oneself. You may feel that at times, you have desired
ALL of these things. That may be true,
but at your base, one of them dominates.
The inspirational leader must have a sense of whom he is leading, in
order to construct an environment where everyone can feel valued. This is not the same as giving everyone what
they want, of putting the man above the mission or of compromising the
importance of focus in the effort of the team.
It is merely the recognition that in order to draw from your people the
best that they've got, you must speak to their hearts, to where it really
matters.
Some people react to strokes, some don't. Some want to feel they are good at what they
do, some want others to feel they are good at what they do! Some want security above all, many others
want to be challenged and take a risk.
It is up to the leader to identify HOW each person wishes to be valued,
and create the environment accordingly.
Many leaders make the mistake of assuming that because they, the leader,
feel valued in a certain way, everyone else must feel that way as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like
that. Leaders can surround themselves
with people who do, but oftentimes the skill sets tend to be similar as
well. Diversity breeds dynamism. It can create conflict and misunderstanding,
that is true, but it also "stretches" the team.
So, the inspirational leader can either, literally, give his
people a test and get an idea of how people wish to be valued that way, or he
can ask them! You, and they, may be
surprised. Many of us will have a very
straight forward idea of how we wish to be valued. Others won't have a clue, right off hand, but
a discerning leader will be able to pick up behavior patterns that, with a
little help from The Enneagram, or Myers Briggs, or DISC or whatever, can
answer the question.
