AstraZeneca Hospital Sales Team Spends a Teambuilding Day on the Schuylkill with Team Champion PDF Print

Historic Boathouse Row provided the setting for the AstraZeneca Hospital Sales Team’s Teambuilding day. The Hospital Sales Team, who assembled for a few days of meetings at their home base in Wilmington , arrived at Crescent Boat House on their last day of meetings. Although their main goals for the day were teambuilding and great fun, the AstraZeneca team took away valuable leadership lessons as well. Haling from all over the country, AstraZeneca learned to ‘row as one’ to achieve their teambuilding goals of the day.

AstraZeneca, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, believes strongly in the power of teamwork and inspirational leadership. The teambuilding seminar, lead  by Olympic rower and Team Concepts founder Dan Lyons, AstraZeneca’s Hospital Sales Team learned about the Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership and how they can apply these leadership lessons to the workplace.

AstraZeneca divided into two teams. Each team came up with a team name, mascot, logo, and goal for the day. This first team building exercise demonstrated the first secret of the Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership: Everyone Wants to be Part of Something Bigger Than Themselves. After an on land rowing demonstration and distribution of team shirts and hats, it was time for the teams to get on the water! Guided by Team Concepts coaches, that consist of national and international champion rowers and coaches, the AstraZeneca team directly learned teamwork and teambuilding concepts by learning to pull together! Their second rowing outing of the day, after a series of seminars and breakout sessions, was ended by the day’s grand finale: The AstraZeneca Regatta!

Dragon Boating and Team Building: A Fun And Effective Learning Experience PDF Print

The sun has barely risen. Even the early bird is asleep, yet on the river is a Dragon Boat team. As they lower their boat into the water, the preparation to race along the surface of the river, in a symphony of effort and coordination, begins with careful effort. This team knows that as a team they can move this heavy boat very quickly but if some don't perform their roles in unison, they'll be dead in the water. What makes this group of rowers unique is that they are not only on the same boating team; they also work together at the same company. They are participating in this Dragon Boating exercise to learn more about team building and leadership development.

On a contemporary Dragon Boat you'll find a crew of around twenty-two people. There are twenty paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, a drummer or caller at the bow faces toward the paddlers, and one person at the helm steers the boat. Smaller Dragon Boats may have as few at ten paddlers and more massive boats can have up to fifty.

Each person on the Dragon Boat has a part to play. Together the boat operates smoothly, but when management and participation are poor, the performance of the boat suffers. It's no wonder why Dragon Boating can be such a fun and effective exercise for team building. Instead of waiting for quarterly numbers to indicate progress, team performance is nearly in real-time and enjoyment is directly related to effective team participation as well as effective management. Lessons are learned much more quickly and no stockholder gets upset over mistakes.

When this weekend is over, this team will start a new week with a different perspective on their role in the workplace. Olympian Dan Lyons, and CEO of Team Concepts, Inc., knows from his own personal experience and from years of team building exercises similar to his "Team Dragon Boat" program, that great teams are found everywhere and when those teams are given better skills and knowledge of how to work with each other, they feel more empowered and experience greater satisfaction in what they do. Indeed, great companies are made from motivated teams of talented individuals. Team Concepts knows they can change the face of team building, one boatload at a time.
